We know all about Hot Girl Summer (alternatively Hot Vaxx Summer), Feral Girl Spring, etc. But do you know what the summer of 2023 vibe is? Pond People Summer1. It’s giving “riparian corridor”. It’s giving “aquatic biologist”. It’s giving “secret garden 1993”.
Who is she? She rarely wears pants. Often found wearing green. Happiest when submerged in a river. “Doesn’t need to shower because she went swimming earlier”. Shaves 2x a year. Wears sunglasses that are giving “frog”. Sartorially adjacent to “sea witch” (also something I made up) and “clowncore” (an actual thing).
Perhaps this collage2 will help paint the picture:
this summer I hope to:
spend a lot of time in & around bodies of water - salty, fresh, and brackish
go to farmer’s markets and say things like “look at this succulent tomato! I will assemble an elegant meal around this”
experiment with accessories: hats, baseball caps, sunglasses, fun shoes, bags, maybe even jewelry (okay let’s not get ahead of ourselves)
make and otherwise acquire a few new summer duds that help me feel inspired about summer dressing
forget all about my dry winter skin (!) and instead soak in my own sweat a lot!

if you’re living in the bay area, you should check out makeshift: center for material studies. my dear friends Karin & Alli are the brains and hearts behind this, and there are so many cool workshops and events! (eg over-dye day, clothes swapping, wooden spoon carving, woven pack baskets)
i finished my cable knit vest! i wrote about it here!
i was feeling very intimidated by sewing projects for a number of weeks, but then one random day last week i suddenly sewed baby bloomers and two pairs of PJ shorts
now i am furiously planning/scheming a couple of summer sews, wish me luck
inspired by magic parachutes and this weird flag-making material they had at our local ‘no-kill shelter for textiles’ (swanson’s), i made this funny little picnic rug & matching stuff sack. one day i hope to have accumulated/made enough quilty textiles that are not too precious (but still pretty) that we can host a big backyard gathering and everyone can sit on one!
i’m working on my first trade in a very long time, and i am equal parts intimidated and extremely excited. these are the inspiration images we’re working with, i love what she has in mind! off to start prepping fabric to dye :)
never heard of this? don’t worry, I just made it up ;)
